Overview: Section 43.12 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) amends the laws that relate to safety and emissions inspections to require less frequent safety inspections for motor vehicles rented or leased to the public by large volume rental companies, to three years instead of annually, and also creates a separate authorization fee that applies to those large volume rental company motor vehicles.
This section also amends the standard motor vehicle authorization fee distribution that applies to all other motor vehicle inspections to remove the Division of Air Quality of the Department of Environmental Quality as a recipient and redistribute that fee portion to the Highway Fund.
This section became effective July 1, 2026.
