Overview: Section 5 of S.L. 2026-58 (House Bill 562) repeals Section 31 of S.L. 2026-46 which authorized the Department of Transportation to create a new "America's Semiquincentennial" special registration plate, and instead authorizes the Department to create an "America's Semiquincentennial" standard license plate. The "America's Semiquincentennial" standard plate will have the words "America 250" at the top of the plate above all other letters and numerals. The background of the "America's Semiquincentennial" plate will depict the mountains to the coast with a cardinal, dogwood flowers, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the North Carolina State Capitol, the Wright Brothers' plane, and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
This section became effective July 7, 2026, but the Division is not required to issue plates with an "America's Semiquincentennial" background until 180 days after the Division has finalized the background design.
