Overview: Section 16.28 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) requires the Office of Indigent Services to study any potential cost-savings that may be attained by reducing the footprint of leased office spaces. The Office of Indigent Services must submit a report by March 1, 2027 to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Justice and Public Safety and the Fiscal Research Division on its findings that must include (i) the location of duty stations for employees of the Office of the Capital Defender and (ii) the utilization of all leased office spaces by all employees of the Office of Indigent Services with a duty station in the City of Durham.
This section became effective July 1, 2026.
